Monte-Carlo, then a new district of Monaco, was the dream concept of Charles III, the Prince of Monaco who ruled from 1856 until his death in 1889. He commissioned French businessman, François Blanc – who had successfully developed the first ‘resort’ concept in Bad Homburg, Germany – and famed architect, Charles Garnier, to build the concept.
Monte-Carlo was almost immediately a success in its European backyard, attracting the aristocrats to the South, and since then, Monaco’s tagline as “the playground for the rich and famous” etches deeply until today.
Monte-Carlo evolving since the 1860s
In the 1950ies, a second wave of fame and glamour arrived in Monte-Carlo, under the reign of Prince Rainier III and in the wake of His wedding with Hollywood icon Grace Kelly, watched by over 50 million spectators worldwide. While Prince Rainier III enhanced the international visibility of Monaco by developing bilateral relations worldwide, Princess Grace created many iconic charity events and invited her Hollywood peers to participate, fostering Monaco’s enduring international image of generosity and cooperation.

Nowadays, more than 150 years after Monte-Carlo was developed, a new Monte-Carlo is ready to welcome you, our newest wave of elite clientele. 4 years of gradual renovation works laid ground in the Monte-Carlo district: the refurbishment of Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo while still opening its doors to clients, the construction of One Monte-Carlo, and now a renovated Casino Square installed with a new pedestrian promenade.
